I have some signs for you… but they’re in American Sign Language, not Auslan (which I’m assuming is what you’re learning). Also, I can relate to this, and have done much trans/queer/LGBT 101 educating of my ASL profs.
The sign, like it’s meaning, does not exist, dick. It’s not like the guys are trying to invalidate cis gender identities, they would just like to be represented. Terrible, I know.
oh, hey, I wasn’t being aggressive – just trying to express some disappointment about the way that relationships were being talked about. My gender (and sexuality) isn’t a weapon to be used against other people, but it seems odd for queer/trans stuff to be completely erased from discussion.
I stumbled upon your comic in July, and liked it so much that I decided to start from the beginning. I’ve been carefully consuming it for eight weeks, and today I caught up. Thank you for sharing your story!
interesting, I already had subverted the particular lesson you referred to in the comic over a year ago – but learned a couple signs I didn’t know tonight
As much as it bugs me, my transman had to point out to me that the trans community still has very little visibility, therefore in my mind, this is more ignorance than exclusion. Most people aren’t out to hurt anyone’s feelings (unrelateable TROLLS aside ;3), they just haven’t been educated in the “more than just two genders” topic. Which, if I may add, is why you made the Gender 101 (sorry if my memory is off) comic in the first place, so kudos to you!
Hey Sam! I really like your comics a whole lot. Any chance you’d ever try raising the funds to print a book of them? I would definitely contribute to said fund, and buy a book. 🙂
I took an ASL class, and when we got to the part about relationships I was really thankful for my teacher. She taught us signs for gay, lesbian, bi, and trans, and showed us how to say things like “adopted” rather than just pretending everyone in the room was straight and cis and would have straight cis babies. This is the only time I’ve taken a language class where this happened.
AHHHHHHH you’re learning sign language?!?! I’m a deaf ftm (and a comic artist as well) and omg it’s so cool that you guys are!
*calms down self* But yes that’s a big problem. In fact- I’ve recently contacted Rainbow alliance (deaf lgbt) club at Galladuet Univ. (for those who don’t know, it’s college for the deaf) and ask them to pretty please make a video that has a comprehensive list of lgbt terms in ASL. WE NEED THAT. Thank you for bringing it up.
Oh and, you guys use Auslan in NZ right? I can ask my deaf friends in Aussie about Auslan signs for lgbt terms.
Ooooh nice!! Yeh, we did a 8 week course, so just learned the basics, but I’d like to take more courses so I can be a bit more fluent.
I’d love love love to learn rainbow terms – my friend who did the course with us is the educator at rainbow youth and wants to be able to do his education programme in sign language, so has done a little bit of research, but I’m sure we’d both benefit heaps from knowing more.
In NZ we do NZSL and , which I think is still quite similar to Auslan, but a bit different.
In my American Sign Language class, we were talking about relationships, and we had to make up fake ones to talk about, and I was talking about my wife (I present as female) and my classmates tried to correct me to say husband. I insisted I meant wife, and my professor high-fived me.
I’m a sign language interpreting student, and this is the best part about having several professors (deaf and hearing) who are gay. We learn the usual cis/hetero signs, but we also learn signs for gay, lesbian, trans, and all the other fun stuff that isn’t in the usual gender/sexual boxes. At least everything that has signs (some stuff doesn’t)
Plus we get super hilarious stories about my professor hiring an interpreter (a rather straight interpreter) for a leather pride event. Hilarity ensued!
BTW-just found your comic a few days ago, and I can’t stop reading I love it!!!

Ooh yes, I’d love to see them!! I’m learning NZSL, but I think it’s kinda similar to Auslan.
I wonder what the sign is for a transman who browbeats others by using his gender as a weapon?
The sign, like it’s meaning, does not exist, dick. It’s not like the guys are trying to invalidate cis gender identities, they would just like to be represented. Terrible, I know.
I wonder what the sign is for “you have too much free time”?

Oh yay! Sheesh, that is a lot to catch up on! I always want to apologise to people who go back to the start, ’cause some of that stuff is sooooo bad!
we talked about this comic at my sign class this evening …
Oh, woah, was it helpful?
interesting, I already had subverted the particular lesson you referred to in the comic over a year ago – but learned a couple signs I didn’t know tonight
including the sign for transgender

I second this. I would contribute to a book making fundraiser and buy a book. You are super cool.
I would also contribute =)

Hey Sam, I loved this. Good on you for pointing this stuff out to those of us who were never educated outside the cis models.

Awesome for your professor!!
