The three people depicted in the second panel are Stormé DeLarverie, Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. There are many more that could be named. There are some really interesting articles online about the history of that night, and subsequent prides – I encourage you to have a look at them. Also, there were other uprisings before, and after, stonewall from LGBTQI+ people against police brutality – like the Compton’s Cafeteria riot in San Francisco in 1966.
Given the riots happening in the USA right now, it feels important to acknowledge that this pride is different. I also want to acknowledge the massive work that’s been done in New Zealand to call out and stop racism within the New Zealand police system.
