AH YES JEANNE D’ARC. BOUTONS LES ANGLAIS HORS DE FRANCE. MONTJOIE SAINT DENIS VERY MUCH.
Joke aside do you realize that Jeanne d’Arc is a nationalist and far right symbol in France ?
Ha! I did not know that! Well, there you go – trans heroes on all sides of the political spectrum 😛 I wish there were other obvious examples that I could have used, but sadly I am lacking in knowledge
Hey Sam! Have you read Transgender Warriors by Leslie Feinberg? It has many interesting historical references (including Joan of Arc). P.s very accurate comic
Joan of Arc was *extremely* religious. The case for her being trans or not is much more murky, especially given that she did not identify as a man and did not have a larger social context in which to place a non-binary identity.
Because she was put on trail by the Catholic Church 6 time in all (5 of which we have records of and 3 of which were posthumous), she is the best-documented figure before the modern age. We know more about her than anyone before her or anyone for a long time after her. And we have her own words describing her motivations and identity. Obviously, these are coloured by being part of an adversarial system. It is clear that she identified as a woman, but did see herself as a special case. Her nickname for herself during her short career was ‘The Virgin’.
As to class-smashing, well, she was a royalist who accepted titles. Surely class-smashing would look less like social climbing?
Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s amazing and have visited historical sites dedicated to her and actually studied French in order to learn more about her, but I don’t think she would recognise the labels you’re putting on her.
