This past week I’ve been thinking about Girlamatic because Raina Telgemeier came to Auckland, and did a talk. It reminded me about the Girlamatic website, because I first started reading Smile on there, as Raina uploaded it a page at a time, and how many other amazing creators hosted their stuff on that site.
It really helped me to be inspired, and have a benchmark for making high quality stories. It showed me there was a readership for queer comics, and stories that didn’t focus on men. It made a huge difference to my life, when I was trying to find queer media – and I was able to find comics like DAR, and Bold Riley, but also to be able to find other amazing comics by a huge range of established, and not so established creators.
This is part one of two of my comic about Girlamatic, so I won’t ramble on too much. But, yeh, that site was a life changer for me.
In the last panel, the comics I listed were only a small selection, and there were other REALLY amazing comics I could have chosen, but these ones made the biggest impact on me at the time. They are (from left to right):
- By the Wayside by Leigh Dragoon
- Smile by Raina Telgemeier
- Bite Me! by Dylan Meconis
- DAR by Erika Moen
- Bold Riley and the Witch in the Wild by Leia Weathington
- Carnation Grows Up illustrated by Sushu Xia and written by someone who I can’t find the name of!
