So there’s been a resurgence of news articles about the upcoming census in New Zealand, and how it won’t ask about gender or sexuality. It’s all a bit frustrating given the thousands of hours that people have donated to Statistics NZ to try to convince them to include us. So… this is my comic about such things.
Massive thanks to Julie and Joe who helped chat this one over with me, and to Mani Mitchell for their line “without data we’re operating in the dark”
I’ve written about this issue before, including this one I did for express magazine five years ago:
I feel kinda bad drawing such a bad likeness to James Shaw, but I also feel really disappointed in his responses to this situation – so I guess we’re on our way to being even.
Unfortunately James has no control over the situation, but was forced to be the one to speak on behalf of it. Really, the Government statistician ought to have been put in front of the cameras to explain why we’re STILL not being seen for no good reason 🙁
Yeh totally understand it wasn’t his decision – it was announced last year in August before he was appointed. I guess I was just bugged about his line about ‘silly answers ruining it’ because that was just so weak.
ON POINT.
Your ability to communicate deep, broad, and otherwise difficult time continues to improve.
Keep it up, hero.
*difficult topics continues to improve with time.
(sometimes my brain moves faster than my fingers. ‘scuse..)
Hi, I have been told I can write a letter/novel when I return my census papers. Would you mind if I included a copy of this comic?
Cheers
Awesome, yeh go for it!
Once again, spot on, Sam…loving your wisdom, creativity and humour! 😀 Love to Joe and Bobby <3
