I’m coming to America – it’s official!
But I need your help internets! I’ve contacted a bunch of places to see if I can do some speaking gigs, but I need your help to let them know that I’m awesome ☺ I also need your help to find other places who might be good contacts for each of the different places. So if you have any ideas/suggestions/influences you’ll be my ultimate superstar if you can let them know about me/let me know about them 😀
I can talk about a whole range of stuff – from Queer and Trans comics, to Media Representations of LGBTQ people, my experiences being a queer gender diverse person, LGBTQ youth work (and working with Queer and Gender Diverse Young people), Queer and Trans experiences in New Zealand, Family Portraits as a way of bringing more Queer and Trans celebratory stories… and other stuff I’m sure!
Here’s where I’m going:
Sept 16-21: Portland, Oregon
o Unconfirmed – In Other Words: Sept 19th
• Confirmed!
o Rose City Comic Con: Sept 20-21th
o Independent publishing Resource Center: Sept 20th
Sept 22-27: New York, New York
• Confirmed:
o Bluestockings: Sept 23.
Sept 28-Oct 2: Chicago, Illinois
You guys, I don’t know any places or people here, so any and all suggestions would be soooo great!
Oct 3 – Oct 8: San Francisco, California
• Places I’ve contacted:
o APE – October 4-5
o Centre for Sex and Culture
o LGBT Center
Also – any one who knows of cheap/free queer friendly accommodation in any of these places (apart from Portland ‘cause that’s sorted :D) please feel free to let me know 😀
I sadly know nothing of America 🙁
But I do know some people in it!
Matt Conn, creator of GaymerX, GaymerConnect and the upcoming queer game Read Only Memories is based in San Fran, as is the co-founder of many of his projects Tony Rocca – who is openly genderqueer.
I’ll ask Matt about speaking places and queer-friendly accommodation 🙂
Laci Green is a sex educator, with her own show on YouTube: Sex+.
She’s also done some work for Planned Parenthood.
I don’t know whereabouts she is based, but I know she’s AWESOME and has done interviews with gay and trans people before in order to help give stories and issues a platform and voice.
She may well be worth contacting to see if you can guest on her show?
Similarly – Doctor Lindsey Doe of Youtube’s ‘Sexplanations’ is an awesome sex educator with a passionate interest in all things sexual and progressive.
Don’t know how to contact either of them though – will see if my contacts have contacts and get back to you. Likely in email because wow, this is long?
I’m totally hopping over the mountains to see you in San Fran! It’d be like a dream come true.
Hi Sam!
Great to hear that you’re going to be in the Bay area. I work at UC Berkeley and I run events for students and faculty. I would love to do my best to get you a speaking gig at one of these if you’re interested. My non work email is smashedcomics@gmail.com, feel free to get in touch anytime.
I respect the work you do and your comics always make me happy!
– Meg
If you need any other idea for Portland, here a are a few:
In Other Words (Portland’s feminist bookstore)
Powell’s (they have a few different locations and often have speakers and readings)
Crying forever because I live in Florida. One day…
Oh no! One day I will make it there I’m sure!
Hell yeah. I work at Bluestockings! I can check in with the events coordinator.
Ohh! Does this mean you will not be attending the Queers & Comics conference in NYC in may?
I was hoping to meet you there!
Oh alas no! I won’t be able to get the time/money together unfortunately!
Really hoping I can get out to New York, NY from Southampton, PA. It’s a 2hr drive one way and I may have College classes.
Eek! Sorry Alex, this was from last year 🙁 hopefully I’ll be back in the states some time tho!!
