Joe and I have been trying for a while now to settle on a good show to watch. I watch a lot of TV, I can deal with a higher level of violence, and a lower level of quality than they can, so I end up watching a bunch more than them. But I really enjoy watching and discussing shows with Joe, and it’s always great when we can find a show we both enjoy that has some queer content in it.
But it’s SOOO Hard to find any show that’s good quality that has a queer storyline without a bunch of violence or trauma about being queer. So many of the stories out there have a ‘it sucks to be queer narrative’ and y’know, there’s a level of reality to that. But… gosh it’d be so nice to have some escapist entertainment that has some excellent queer representation that doesn’t focus on being bullied, misgendered, or beaten.
So, yeh, TV makers – make me a show that’s all about the awesomeness of being queer and trans and I’ll watch the shit out of it.
OH AND DUNEDINERS! I’ll be in your city this week! Come and here me talk 30th July, 5.30pm in the Evison Lounge (1st floor), OUSA Recreation Centre.
You might like Steven Universe – it’s an animated cartoon on Cartoon Network, but you can also find it on YouTube.
waaaaaay ahead of ya! http://www.roostertailscomic.com/comic/gemsonas/
I was going to say the only answer is re watching Steven Universe! Smartest queer show on tv. I’d be sad about that but it’s too cool
I know the deal you’re in and it’s a bugger to get through 🙁
Especially when so much sexism, transphobia & homophobia are so casual.
ESPECIALLY in older show.
I know you already know about Steven Universe and Korra…
While Agent Carter lacks a queer story (well, some undertones with one character) and deals with a LOT of sexism, it is incredibly well done and awesome. Peggy is such a strong and amazing character – very inspiring.
The Switch is coming soon, that crowdfunded it’s awesomeness – http://www.welovetheswitch.com/
I’ve interviewed, and they’re lovely people. There are more trans actors than trans roles – genders all over the place 😀
Here’s hoping we see more trans-inclusive and just queer-positive programs in future.
Actually have you seen Trans-Parent? I haven’t yet, but I’m interested. Don’t see much deal with transmen, let alone older transmen who aren’t incredibly conventionally attractive.
Oh I just started watching Agent Carter – and am really enjoying it! It’s even campy enough and not-too-violent that Joe’s enjoying it too.
I pledged in the switch kickstarter – I’m really excited for it! It looks great.
I watched the first half of Transparent – it’s great in lots of ways but has a pretty dark sense of humour, and has lots of really heart wrenching scenes – so, again, good but not great for escapist fun filled entertainment
Have you heard of the web series Carmilla? It’s full of queer ladies and based off of the original lesbian vampire story. One of the characters is genderqueer!
YES! I watched that last year – it’s so good!!
You two guys sound like me and my boyfriend when we try to watch anything and we just sit there going back and forth.
have you found any good shows to watch together?
Well it’s been difficult but I agreed to give his suggestion of Zoids a chance it may be an old Anime but it could be fun.
A quirky lesbian romance movie that I absolutely adore is “Saving Face” (2004). It’s a wonderful look at queer ladies, the Asian immigrant community in America, and challenging cultural norms with quirky zaniness. There’s very little overt homophobia, with most of the conflict coming up from the different real-world priorities of the characters, especially their careers.
Yes! I love that movie so much!
NZ gets BBC right? QI is always good for a laugh and usually quite queer friendly (avoid the “girls and boys” episode though, it’s loaded with evo psych bull)
SENSE8!!!! YEAH!!! ALL MATRIX FANS UNITE!!!
Half of the reason i loved Will & Grace was the treatment of Will.
Ugh this is an old post and I’m sorry, but I would really recommend The Fosters. The one trans character doesn’t pop up until later in the series but he’s portrayed accurately and nicely, by a trans male. There’s plenty of queerness, believe me.
This is my first time commenting and I have to say I love all your work. I’m fairly young (16) and I’m not out to anyone except my best friend. I’m also geeky and somewhat chubby as well. I just started reading your comics this morning and I love them so much. Thank you!!
Ohhh yes, I keep meaning to watch the Fosters – I watched a few seasons and really liked it.
Thank you for your kind words and yay for geeky and (somewhat) chubby folks 😀 😀 😀
