This comic took me a bloody long time to write and draw. It’s been a really shitty week in the world, and I wanted to write something about Trans Week of Awareness, and/or Trans Day of Remembrance (which is today, btw) – it’s not perfect but this is what I ended up with.

Dear Sam,
You are awesome.
Aware and unhelpful of Auckland.
Hi Sam this is great. Are you publishing it? Would be good to have for students. Awesome work Sam you are amazing, thank you!
Thank you for the great work you do in raising awareness =) Hopefully future generations will not understand parts of your comics because transphobia is alien to them.
If you’d like some real facts on how trans people are treated in prison from someone who actually works in one, hit me up. How dare they protest my right to walk in a pride match, and violently protest at that. Their methods are not peaceful and their ignorance of what actually happens in prisons is disturbing. The one person who unfriended me when I announced I was working for Corrections was one of them, I assume so she didn’t come too close to any actual facts.
Yeah….I tried looking into transition/hormones (proud member of team genderqueer here) here at Lincoln. Got asked to wait two weeks while the doctor looked things up before turning up. Then got asked what ‘dysphoria’ meant within 30 seconds of arriving. That went about as well as you’d think given that said research only apparently found one website (pre-2008 at that). Well meaning but utterly clueless people really can hurt.
In the end I decided to not even try. Hopefully my plans to get the uni here to be more acknowledging of trans peeps are a bit more successful……
